Candela measures luminous intensity based on wax candles

Despite living in an era of ultra-bright light-emitting diodes and lasers, our base unit for luminous intensity is still awkwardly tied to the brightness of a standard candle. We mapped the absolute peak of modern technological illumination directly back to a burning stick of wax. We are essentially measuring race cars in horse trotting speeds.
