Binoculars functionally started as two merged telescopes
Sometimes the greatest technological leaps are just the absolute dumbest, most obvious ideas. Early single-tube spyglasses completely ruined depth perception, so a brilliant optical designer just took two separate telescopes and physically strapped them together perfectly parallel. By adding complex internal glass prisms to shorten the massive tube length, modern binoculars were lazily born.
