Microsoft put a data center under the sea

Cooling a massive warehouse of servers requires so much energy that Microsoft decided it was cheaper to just throw the whole thing in the ocean. Project Natick sunk a sealed pod of 864 servers 117 feet deep in 2018. It turned out to be wildly successful, as the nitrogen atmosphere and lack of clumsy human engineers resulted in a failure rate one-eighth that of land-based data centers.
