A closer look
Ancient Nubia was essentially the Detroit of antiquity, pumping out so much iron that the resulting industrial trash piles literally reshaped the local geography. While the Egyptians next door were obsessed with bronze and gold, the Kingdom of Kush pivoted hard to ironworking. They harvested local timber to fuel massive furnaces, forging countless spears, tools, and arrowheads that made them a military terror. They smelted so aggressively that to this day, modern archaeologists have to navigate giant, literal hills of ancient industrial waste just to reach the temples.
