Polymerase chain reactions copy DNA millions of times

When crime scene investigators find a single microscopic flake of skin, they cannot test it directly. They dump the DNA into a thermal cycler that rapidly heats and cools the sample, aggressively tricking the biological enzymes into copying the genetic code over and over again.
