Household bleach does not actually remove the dirt from your favorite white shirt; it just turns the dirt invisible. Sodium hypochlorite actively shatters the double bonds of chromophores, the specific molecules responsible for absorbing light and showing pigment. The stain is technically still physically present on the fabric, but it is completely incapable of reflecting color to your eyes.
