Before the glorious Ayn Rand-inspired underwater dystopia of Rapture, Bioshock's pitch was basically an interactive true-crime documentary. The developers were obsessed with 1970s cult deprogramming until they realized that playing a guy in a turtleneck arguing with brainwashed hippies wasn't exactly thrilling gameplay. So they swapped the cultists for mutated junkies and the underground bunker for the bottom of the ocean.
