Network television was so puritanical in the 1950s that acknowledging basic human biology was considered deeply scandalous. The producers had to wage an all-out war with censors just to show a toilet tank in a bathroom scene, and even then, they were strictly forbidden from showing the actual bowl. They only got away with it because it was critical to a plot where the kids hide a baby alligator inside the tank.
