The Moviola was less of an elegant creative tool and more of a terrifying industrial loom. Editors had to stand upright, operating the monstrous green machine via foot pedals, praying it wouldn't randomly chew up the priceless original film negative. It single-handedly dictated the frantic, rhythmic pacing of early cinema because editors had to physically wrestle the footage into submission.
