A closer look
Nature has a funny way of reclaiming our forgotten infrastructure and turning it into a spectacular, albeit damp, light show. The Old Helensburgh Station in New South Wales was abandoned in 1915 due to excessive smoke buildup choking the train passengers. Left to rot in the Australian rainforest, the flooded, pitch-black railway tunnels have since been completely overtaken by thousands of bioluminescent fungus gnats. Wading through the eerie, ankle-deep mud in total darkness rewards hikers with a glittering, galaxy-like ceiling of glowworms.
