The US Army sent a convoy of trucks from DC to San Francisco in 1919 just to see if it was possible. It took 62 agonizing days of sinking into mud and collapsing wooden bridges. A young Dwight D. Eisenhower hated the trip so much it later inspired him to carpet the country in the Interstate Highway System.
