If you ever needed proof of how seriously the Celtic monks took their alcohol, just look at the dictionary. The modern word whiskey is an anglicization of the classical Gaelic phrase 'uisce beatha.' Monks who distilled the early spirits genuinely viewed the burning, intoxicating liquid as a miraculous elixir capable of prolonging life and curing ailments. Today, it mostly just cures social anxiety.
