Rhinoceros simply means nose horn in ancient Greek

Why waste time on poetic names when you can just state the most painfully obvious physical trait? The ancient Greeks observed a massive, armored beast charging at them with a massive spike on its face, and simply combined 'rhis' (nose) with 'keras' (horn). It is the etymological equivalent of calling a dog a 'fur barker,' but it has successfully survived as the official terminology for thousands of years.
