Physicists possess a deeply sarcastic naming convention. When calculating cross-sectional areas of atomic nuclei, they needed a unit for something unthinkably microscopic. They called it a 'barn' entirely because hitting a nucleus was sarcastically compared to hitting the broad side of a massive farm building.
