The periodic table used to be a wildly unorganized guessing game based on atomic weight until Henry Moseley started shooting X-rays at elements. He proved that atomic number was a real physical property, fixed the table's glaring errors, and was nominated for a Nobel Prize—right before getting himself shot by a sniper in Gallipoli at age 27.
