A closer look
The primary author of the Declaration of Independence was apparently susceptible to some wildly stupid romantic decisions. While serving as a diplomat in France, a 43-year-old Jefferson became aggressively infatuated with Maria Cosway. While out on a walk with her, he decided the best way to show off his undeniable American charm was to aggressively vault over a fence. He failed miserably, landed on his wrist, and broke it in several places.
