A closer look
Dogs and humans both experience a massive surge in oxytocin, the love and bonding hormone, when they simply stare into each other's eyes. This chemical feedback loop is the exact same biological mechanism that helps human mothers bond with their newborn infants. It proves that our canine companions literally feel chemical love for us, which is heartwarming until you realize they look at a dropped piece of hot dog with nearly the exact same level of affection. Evolution completely hijacked our neurochemistry to make us essentially worship a creature that happily eats its own vomit and barks at the mailman every single day. We are emotionally hostage to a species that traded its wolf heritage for a comfortable bed and free treats, and frankly, they played us perfectly!
