Why Durak’s Last Player Becomes “the Fool”
In Russian, durak means “fool.” The game makes that word the loser’s title: players try to get rid of their cards, and whoever is left holding cards at the end is the one who failed to escape the pile. The name turns a result into a role, giving the game a small sting of social embarrassment as well as a winner-and-loser outcome.
A Loss That Carries Into the Next Hand
The final player’s penalty often reaches beyond the current round: that player deals the next hand. It is a simple way to keep the loser visibly involved rather than letting them disappear from play. The label and the chore reinforce each other—being “the fool” is not just a score on paper, but the person who has to set up the next chance for everyone else to win.
