Nintendo looking at a flawless, buttery-smooth PC port of their flagship game and saying 'nah' is a truly legendary bag fumble. Before making Doom, coding wizard John Carmack figured out how to replicate smooth side-scrolling on bulky DOS computers, entirely cloning Mario 3 to impress Nintendo executives. Nintendo politely praised the tech but firmly insisted their games belonged strictly on their own consoles. Spurned by the rejection, Carmack's team started id Software and invented the modern shooter instead.
