The ultimate symbol of modern Satanic rebellion is just a product of incredibly bad spelling. During the Crusades, the Knights Templar were accused by the Inquisition of worshipping a false idol named 'Baphomet.' Historians agree this was just a corrupted, ignorant Old French mispronunciation of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. It wasn't until the 1850s that occultist Eliphas Levi drew a picture of a goat-man and decided to slap the totally unrelated name onto it.
