Why nitroglycerin is so dangerously unstable

Nitroglycerin is an incredibly heavy, oily liquid that fundamentally hates being intact. Shaking it slightly too hard, dropping it, or even just looking at it wrong can cause its chemical bonds to completely shatter in a massive, catastrophic explosion. It is entirely useless on its own because it is too completely unstable to survive basic transport.
