The Calculator’s Missing Key: Backspace
The familiar action is deleting just the last digit. The iPhone Calculator has no visible backspace key, so a mistyped number can seem to leave you with two choices: accept the error or clear the whole entry and start again.
That matters because a calculator entry is built one digit at a time. If you type 583 instead of 582, the error is in the final keystroke; clearing the entire number throws away the correct digits, too. A dedicated delete key would let you repair the entry in place, as on many physical calculators and phone keyboards.
The Eraser Is Hidden in a Gesture
On the iPhone Calculator, you can swipe left or right across the number display to remove the last digit. It works like a backspace button, but the screen does not show a button or label explaining the gesture. The feature is easy to miss precisely because it is available only through an action the interface leaves implicit.
So the common complaint is not that the calculator cannot correct a single-digit mistake at all. It is that the correction is concealed rather than offered as an obvious control—a small design choice that can turn a routine typo into a moment of needless frustration.
