George Lucas showed an early, unedited cut of the original 1977 Star Wars to his filmmaker friends, and they universally agreed it was an incomprehensible, pacing-free disaster. His then-wife, Marcia Lucas, alongside editors Paul Hirsch and Richard Chew, completely dismantled and reconstructed the film in the editing room to save it from flopping. She introduced the concept of the ticking clock during the Death Star trench run, turning a boring space dogfight into a high-stakes cinematic masterpiece. For her trouble, she won an Academy Award, got divorced from George a few years later, and was essentially erased from the franchise's glorious mythological history by fanboys who think George birthed the entire universe from his brain fully formed. So whenever you watch A New Hope and feel actual tension, remember that a brilliant woman had to step in and aggressively fix a man's sprawling, chaotic mess just so we could have baby Yoda merchandise forty years later
