During the Cold War, the USSR figured out how to keep a plane flying for weeks at a time using an unshielded nuclear reactor. The Tupolev Tu-119 actually took flight, successfully terrifying both the Americans and the poor Russian pilots trapped inside. They essentially traded the inconvenience of mid-air refueling for a fatal dose of gamma rays. Shockingly, the project was canceled.
