A closer look

In the grim darkness of the far future, the most powerful weapon on the battlefield is actually a strategically placed piece of plastic foam. In miniature wargames like Warhammer 40k, the lethality of ranged weapons is so incredibly high that terrain tactics dictate the entire flow of the game before a single die is rolled. If a board lacks large, Line-of-Sight blocking terrain, the player who wins the roll to go first can mathematically shoot the opposing army off the table on turn one. This forces tournament organizers to rigidly standardize L-shaped ruins, turning a thematic war simulator into a highly geometric game of architectural hide-and-seek.
