A closer look
Silicon solar panels are getting a serious reality check from artificial crystals. Perovskite materials have a brilliant lattice structure for absorbing light, but they are notoriously fragile, plagued by microscopic 'defects' where electrons get trapped and energy is lost as useless heat. Oxford scientists decided to fight fire with fire. By deliberately doping the crystal with specific chemical impurities, they intentionally trapped electrons in highly localized spots. Paradoxically, this atomic sabotage actually neutralized the original defects, violently boosting the crystal's ability to channel electricity. It’s the materials science equivalent of curing a headache with a tactical hammer.
