That is exactly what happened to Peter Watkins' 1965 docudrama 'The War Game.' The BBC secretly colluded with the UK government to ban the film from television, citing its horrifyingly plausible depiction of a nuclear strike on Britain. It won an Oscar anyway while sitting in a broadcast vault.
