Why movie couples had to keep one foot on the floor

Nothing preserves the moral fabric of society quite like strict limb placement. To avoid the horrifying implication that adults might be physically intimate, early film censors mandated that if a married couple shared a bed on screen, at least one actor had to keep a foot firmly planted on the ground at all times.
