Not satisfied with just finding uranium, Klaproth turned his attention to crushing up beautiful jargon crystals. He heated and filtered the resulting sludge to isolate a brand-new earth element completely distinct from aluminum or silica. He proved that systematically destroying expensive gems is a surprisingly valid form of chemical exploration.
