A closer look
In the late 1940s, the doomed DuMont Television Network decided to take live broadcasting on the road by cramming an entire TV studio into a massive, heavily branded bus called the Telecruiser. It was a logistical nightmare on wheels. These lumbering behemoths required miles of heavy cabling, devoured enough electricity to dim a small neighborhood, and practically cooked the technicians alive with the ambient heat from massive vacuum tubes. Most of the time, the biggest drama wasn't the live sporting event they were trying to film, but whether the Telecruiser itself was going to spontaneously combust in the parking lot.
