Free love was championed by 19th-century mediums

Long before the 1960s, 19th-century Spiritualist mediums were pioneering the 'Free Love' movement. Because they supposedly answered only to the 'higher laws' of the spirit world, female mediums argued that earthly marriage contracts were irrelevant. It was the ultimate mystical loophole to get out of oppressive Victorian gender roles and secure a divorce.
