It's hard to imagine anyone turning down a billion-dollar IP, but Stan Lee's publisher Martin Goodman genuinely despised the idea of Peter Parker. He argued that people inherently hate spiders, teenagers can only be sidekicks, and superheroes shouldn't have chronic depression or money problems. Lee snuck the story into a canceled anthology comic anyway, proving that spite is the single greatest motivator in publishing history.
