A closer look
For over eighty years, cinema scholars accepted that a quarter of Fritz Lang's 1927 sci-fi masterpiece was lost to the ashes of history. It turns out, the missing footage was just taking a very long vacation in South America. In 2008, a heavily damaged, extremely flammable 16mm negative containing the legendary lost 25 minutes was randomly discovered shoved in a dusty film canister in Argentina, fundamentally altering the narrative arc of one of the most important movies ever made.
