Why a brief stop can snarl the Amalfi Coast

The coastal road has little spare space: it winds along steep slopes, with tight bends and stretches where vehicles have few places to pull aside. A car stopping for a photo can therefore occupy part of the route rather than simply pause beside it. Other drivers must slow, wait, or squeeze past, and each delay can hold up the vehicles behind them.

A bottleneck with few ways around

On a broad road, traffic can often flow around a stopped car. On a narrow coastal stretch, a bend or passing vehicle may make that impossible. The queue then grows faster than it clears, especially when traffic includes larger vehicles that need more room to maneuver. A quick photo stop can disrupt movement well beyond the spot where it began.

That is why the restriction is about more than keeping traffic moving. Along a road with limited room to pull over, the safest place to take in the view is a designated stopping area—not the lane itself.
