Sixteen horses lost a tug-of-war with a vacuum

Otto von Guericke wanted to prove that vacuums actually existed, so he pulled the ultimate 17th-century flex. He mashed two massive copper hemispheres together, pumped all the air out of the middle, and tied sixteen horses to them to pull them apart. The horses completely failed. Atmospheric pressure clamped the hollow metal domes shut so tightly that raw horsepower couldn't beat the sheer weight of the sky.
