Why PlayStation discs were dyed black

HERE’S THE INTERESTING PART

There was absolutely no mechanical benefit to making PS1 CDs black. Sony just wanted them to look futuristic and intimidating. They also hoped the dark plastic would trick casual pirates into thinking they couldn't burn copies on standard clear CD-Rs. Spoiler alert: it did not stop the pirates at all.
