A closer look
If you think modern politics is deeply uncivilized, you clearly missed the part of history where lawmakers resorted to medieval weaponry. In 1798, Representative Matthew Lyon spat in the face of Roger Griswold. Griswold retaliated a few days later by aggressively beating Lyon with a heavy hickory cane. Lyon frantically grabbed a pair of metal fire tongs from the fireplace, and the two grown men proceeded to dual on the House floor while their colleagues just watched.
