Agnosticism and gnosticism are literal polar opposites

Coined in the nineteenth century, agnosticism is the humble admission that you basically know nothing about the ultimate mysteries of the universe. In stark contrast, early gnosticism was the arrogant claim that you, and only you, possessed the secret, undeniable truth required for salvation. One is a philosophical shrug, while the other is the spiritual equivalent of hoarding all the answers to the final exam.
