Leon Teisserenc de Bort relentlessly launched hundreds of unmanned balloons carrying heavy thermometers into the freezing sky. He noticed the temperature consistently dropped until a specific altitude, where it stubbornly stabilized. He proved the atmosphere is sliced into highly distinct, rigid layers instead of just fading endlessly into the void.
