A closer look
Long before modern geology mapped out volatile tectonic plates, isolated island nations developed incredibly elaborate biological explanations for terrifying seismic phenomena. They deeply believed a gigantic, restless mythical catfish or primordial serpent slumbered directly beneath the rocky surface of the earth. According to the legend, whenever the colossal mystical beast grew deeply annoyed or attempted to dramatically turn over in its sleep, the sudden movement triggered highly destructive earthquakes upon the helpless human civilization above.
