A Small Part Solves a Handoff Problem
A fuel cap has to do two opposite jobs: seal the filler neck tightly while driving, then come completely out of the way when it is time to refuel. A tether connects the removable cap to the car so those steps do not require setting the cap down or keeping it in hand.
The cap still turns and lifts off its threaded opening as usual. Once free, the flexible strap bends so the cap can hang beside the filler area, leaving room for the nozzle. The tether is long enough to allow that movement but short enough to keep the cap within reach.
Why Flexibility Matters
A rigid link would make the cap harder to position and could pull against it as the driver opens the fuel door or moves the cap aside. A flexible tether instead bends with the cap, accommodating the small differences in how people hold and park it. Its job is not to carry weight or secure the fuel door; it only needs to keep the cap attached during refueling.
That simple connection also avoids a predictable nuisance: a loose cap can be left on a pump, dropped, or misplaced between uses. The tether does not make the seal itself better. It makes the moment when the seal is removed—and then put back—less dependent on remembering where the cap went.
