Why the Qing Court Relied on Eunuchs
The Forbidden City was not just a residence. It was a walled administrative world, with the emperor’s household, ceremonial spaces, storerooms, kitchens, and workshops all requiring daily attention. Eunuchs—men castrated before entering palace service—handled many jobs inside this restricted world, from carrying messages and managing supplies to serving members of the imperial family.
Their presence reflected a concern central to dynastic rule: the emperor’s household was also the source of the next generation of rulers. Access to women of the imperial family was tightly controlled, and men allowed close to them were expected not to create rival claims to the throne through unauthorized children. Castration was treated as a safeguard, though it did not make every eunuch harmless or guarantee that no misconduct could occur.
Access Became a Source of Power
A eunuch’s job could place him near people and information that officials outside the palace could not reach. He might carry an order, arrange an audience, oversee household staff, or learn what the emperor was considering before it became public. That access could make a trusted servant an intermediary between the throne and the wider bureaucracy.
The same arrangement created a vulnerability. If an emperor depended on a small circle of attendants to relay messages and manage daily business, those attendants could shape what reached him—and what did not. Some eunuchs therefore gained influence beyond their formal duties. Their power came not from a separate army or a hereditary title, but from proximity, information, and control over the routines of the court.
The Palace’s Safeguard Had a Tradeoff
Eunuchs helped make an enormous, secluded household function, while the restrictions on access were meant to protect the imperial succession. Yet the system concentrated practical authority in people whose closeness to the ruler could be difficult for distant officials to monitor. The very access that made eunuchs useful to the emperor could also make them powerful in their own right.
