A closer look

Koalas possess completely smooth brains devoid of the folds and ridges that give other mammals higher cognitive processing power. This lack of cortical folding means they are quite literally incapable of performing complex tasks or adapting to new situations. If you pick eucalyptus leaves off a branch and put them on a plate, a koala will genuinely not recognize them as food and will simply starve to death sitting next to its only source of nutrition. They evolved to eat toxic, nutrient-poor leaves that require so much digestion they have to sleep twenty hours a day just to survive. It is living proof that sometimes nature does not select for intelligence, agility, or strength, but rather for an animal's sheer, unyielding commitment to being completely oblivious
