Tulum was once an idyllic, eco-friendly yoga retreat on the Mexican coast but has rapidly devolved into an absolute environmental nightmare heavily reliant on massive, loud diesel generators because the local electrical grid cannot support the explosion of luxury boutique hotels. The bohemian influencers paying hundreds of dollars a night to 'reconnect with the earth' and drink organic matcha lattes are ironically powering their air conditioning and neon jungle raves with incredibly toxic fossil fuels being burned right behind the bamboo walls. Nothing screams spiritual awakening and sustainability quite like doing an overpriced sound bath while actively contributing to the aggressive carbon poisoning of the entire Yucatan peninsula
