The terrifying radioactive element that fuels nuclear reactors is destined for an incredibly boring retirement. Through a long, agonizing chain of alpha and beta decays, uranium continually sheds subatomic weight, briefly becoming radium and polonium along the way, before finally stopping at stable lead. It starts as an energetic hazard and inevitably becomes dull plumbing material.
