Before you could drop a synth plugin into a laptop, making electronic sounds required heavy machinery. The earliest synthesizers were massive, wall-sized modular behemoths that required operators to manually plug patch cables just to make a simple bleep. They looked less like musical instruments and more like you were trying to hack into a Cold War mainframe.
