Why German theaters changed A Doll’s House ending
When Henrik Ibsen’s masterpiece ended with Nora aggressively leaving her husband, German audiences were completely scandalized. It was considered so inappropriate that lead actresses refused to perform the ending. Ibsen was violently forced to write an alternate ending where Nora cries and stays for the children, an act he later called a 'barbaric outrage'.
