A closer look
Filmmakers behind the 1971 classic Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory created the famous chocolate river by mixing water with actual chocolate and cream. Because leaving dairy products under hot studio lights for weeks is a brilliant logistical decision, the river eventually spoiled and left the entire soundstage smelling like a rotting dumpster. The actors had to pretend they were in a magical wonderland of pure imagination while actively suppressing their gag reflexes from the stench of curdled milk. It is almost poetic that a movie entirely focused on punishing greedy children involved the crew accidentally creating an actual toxic waste dump right in the middle of a beloved family musical
