Before it became an intense Olympic bloodsport, ping-pong was just an excuse for rich people to avoid engaging in actual conversation after dinner. Upper-class Victorians would clear their dining tables and bat a champagne cork back and forth using expensive cigar box lids. They genuinely called it 'Wiff-Waff' with a straight face before trademark laws forced the far less embarrassing name 'table tennis'.
