Swinging a wooden paddle is essentially irrelevant compared to the specific polymer glued to the surface. Table tennis completely relies on the microscopic stickiness of inverted rubber sheets. When the lightweight celluloid ball impacts the highly grippy surface at an extreme angle, it radically deforms and violently grips the rubber, creating astronomical levels of aerodynamic spin that can cause the ball to viciously swerve entirely off the table.
